Mind Chatter
    by Jonathan Lockwood Huie

"I'm too fat; I'm too thin; and my hair is a fright;
And I'm never enough; and my world is not right;
I'm not smart; I'm not cute; I'm not strong; I'm a bust
I earn scorn; I earn hate; I'm no good; I disgust."

The Ought-To Need-To Tango
    by Jonathan Lockwood Huie

I am racked with the guilt and the pain of I should,
and I ought, and I can't, but I must.
I can't rest; I can't sleep; I'm just not understood.
And I hate that the world is unjust.
I have work; I have woes; I have troubles for life;
But I don't have a ME that I trust.

Revenge
    by Jonathan Lockwood Huie

The ugliest word in the world is revenge.
It spells hate; it spells fear; it spells greed.
For my loss, I must kill; I must steal - must avenge.
It’s your fault; you must pay; you must bleed.

I am my father
    by Jonathan Lockwood Huie

The sons of the sons of my sons will say
that hate-love of father has made them that way.
It always has been, and always will be,
that I am my father; my sons are me.

Confused Memories of Childhood
    by Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Hate to my father, cruel hate,
confused with love - a mix not great.
The man I love - the man I hate;
the man I want to emulate.

The girl of my dreams
    by Jonathan Lockwood Huie

The girl of my dreams is my mother’s shadow,
cast upon the distant movie screen of my future.

Eucharist of No Church
    by Jonathan Lockwood Huie

As she passed among the hungry and the dejected,
delivering the rations and water,
she chanted in a low whisper,
"the spark of the mind - the sparkle of the soul,"
"the spark of the mind - the sparkle of the soul," ...

Monkey Mind
    by Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Monkey Mind, Monkey Mind, chatter away;
You stay with me always; you clutter my day.
My constant companion, my partner in crime,
You watch rainbows and sunsets, and smear them in slime.

There's no SILENCE around when you talk in my head;
and you never shut up, and you won't 'til I'm dead.
You don't know of ABUNDANCE, but only of need;
You know lack; you know want; it's what some might call greed.

"It's too hot; it's too cold; and they did it all wrong;
And they should have known better; I've known all along.
I've got my own troubles; don't tell me of yours;
I know all of the answers, and all of the cures."

"It is never enough; I need oh so much more;
Please respect me, and love me like you did before.
And I really deserve it, or maybe I don't;
I must love you and keep you, or maybe I won't."

"I'm too fat; I'm too thin; and my hair is a fright;
And I'm never enough; and my world is not right;
I'm not smart; I'm not cute; I'm not strong; I'm a bust
I earn scorn; I earn hate; I'm no good; I disgust."

I am racked with the guilt and the pain of I should,
and I ought, and I can't, but I must.
I can't rest; I can't sleep; I'm just not understood.
And I hate that the world is unjust.

I have work; I have woes; I have troubles for life;
But I don't have a ME that I trust.
And on, and on, and on it goes; the chatter will not stop;
With noise like that within my head, I fear my skull will pop.

But just suppose I turned you off - you chatter in my head;
Imagine Life with Peace and Joy; with open road ahead.

Roller Coaster
    by Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Roller coaster, roller coaster, high as the sky;
we watch as the other folks scream on by.
the roller coaster line snakes out to the gate;
we stand and we watch and we wait, wait, wait.

The chatter is so nervous, thought the talk is very bold.
"I'm not afraid, I love this ride," but my armpits were not told.
you can smell the fear, you can sense the fright,
the girls start to giggle, while the guys strut their might.

We're through the line and onto the ride;
I'm telling myself that's nobody's died,
since at least last week - and that was a freak.
I'm trembling; I'm shaking; I'm ready to shriek.

Two hundred feet up - an inch at a time;
the clatter, the chatter, the breath holding climb.
we're nearing the top; we're flattening out;
I wish I weren't here, but it's too late for doubt.

Over the crest, and starting to fall,
my shoulders are shaking; my stomach's a ball.
we fall faster and faster; the world's now a blur;
I float lighter and lighter; the wheels shake and they whir.

Arms held up high, or hands holding tight;
some may cry, some may cheer, but for all, it's a fright.
everyone screams - some out loud, some within;
the faces are telling: some frown, while some grin.

The bottom is here, the falling is done;
we loop up on over; my head weighs a ton.
the top of the loop, and my weight's on the straps;
I'm sure they're built strong; they would never collapse.

Full three sixty we flip, and then up with a rush,
and then down and around 'til my body is mush.
corkscrew hard left; invert, jerk to right;
my body is flailing; I must be a sight.

The ride is now slowing; we're nearing the end;
my body is shaking; my neck hurts to bend.
the straps are removed, my legs struggle to work;
I wobble a little, and feel like a jerk.

That was great; I'm so happy; the ground feels so good.
if you thought I was frightened, you misunderstood.
my reasons for riding are far beyond ken,
but I'm waiting and wanting to do it again.
